Burd Brothers trucks might be blue and white on the outside, but they are turning green inside with environmentally friendly and cost-saving technologies.
Why is green technology important to Burd Brothers Trucking? "The cost savings are incredible," says Dick Burdick, CEO, "but ultimately it is because of the air we breathe. By reducing our emissions and fuel consumption, we are helping the future of our environment."
The Idle Management System (IMS) was implemented in April 2008 in the truck fleet. The system, which costs $7,500 per truck, limits the engine idle time to five minutes. After five minutes, the truck automatically shuts down, reducing the fuel consumption and the carbon footprint. Additionally, the IMS technology uses batteries to cool the truck cab and only one gallon of fuel per eight hours to heat it. By saving on fuel costs, Burd Brothers is able to recover the initial purchase price of the Idle Management System in less than 1 1/2 years.
In addition to the IMS technology, Burdick and his two sons, Shaun and Tyler, have applied other green practices to their business. Installation of skylights in the warehousing and distribution facilities has lowered the use of electricity. Electronic invoicing and delivery receipts have been implemented to reduce paper consumption in the business operations.
Founded in 1993, Burd Brothers is a family owned and operated regional truckline which employs 50 people and has over 125,000 sf of warehouse capacity including 30,000 sf certified for hazardous materials. Headquartered in Batavia, Burd Brothers has recently opened a service terminal in Dayton to better serve that market and more cost effectively continue international shipments to Canada.
